Introduction
This project began when I returned from Rome in the late August. I realized how people respond to their environment through the observing of huge groups of tourists in world renown locations.
This has led to forcing a challenge of changing a viewer’s perception of location.
My aim is to make an audience see where they have been, to change the emotions of an area whist considering surrounding structures; delving into the history in order to truly discover the significance of features in every day life. I feel as though there is no connection between people and place and so I want to bridge this gap.
There is a great quote which has aided my development:
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
Marcel Proust
I will run with the theme of ‘UnTouchable’ (in contrast to Liverpool’s Biennial) in order to give myself an anchor to consider in the development of this project as well as singularly summing up my perspective on modern society.
I have began experiments through observation using painting, linear drawing and basic photoshop editing of photographs to explore what would work in achieving my goals.
I favor photography as I am currently researching for my dissertation under the title of The Invention of Photography and its Impact on Art from 1950’s. Also it is an automatic assumption that photography is a documentation, which I want to exploit.
Project Proposal/Feasibility
The Project now is to document particular aspects of the city. This will lead to a series of photographs as well as a document of research suppling the process of image selection. It will demonstrate the connection between place and person as a viewer in a white wall gallery is compelled to attempt to understand the objective of the work if there is one. This work requires the viewer to take their time, this will be achieved through familiarity, once a person recognizes the subject after the initial observation, they will be encouraged to be educated through the images and information I am providing.
Project Plan
The plan is to collect as many Town Plans as possible through various means. Then compare them through scale tracking development and changes. This will enable me to find the streets which have remained, these will be highlighted and documented continuously through various contemporary application via photography.
I will use extreme close ups to limit the context yet produce abstract photography and once again enforce the concepts of observation, journey and documentation.
Whilst this will be ongoing, I will look into the history of what I am documenting, gathering information.
By the end I will have documented a journey which will be compressed into a small space emphasising the vastness of being passive.
