Jean-Marc Bustamente

Whilst doing research for my essay, I just stumbled across this artist in 'The 20th Century Art Book' Published by Phaidon 1996.

The Installation pictured is called 'Stationary 1' (1990), it depicts a coloured photograph of Cypress trees with two L shaped sculptures made of cement. As I have yet to attain a scanner, this is the best image I could find of it, just one of six prints used in the exhibition at Musee de Saint-Etienne, a rubbish website by the way, it has an archive but refuses to display anything earlier than 2007, at least to me.

Anyway, the reasoning for me adding this to my blog is that the installation displays a knowledge of space in the room it is displayed in and arranged in such a way to convey a relaxing atmosphere allowing the audience to contemplate the relationship between the photography and the sculpture, the captured accurate images and the minimalistic man made sculptures. This also brings to light the contrast between the country and the urban, the intervention of man limiting the space of nature which is then transferred into the limited space of the photo frame.

I can relate this to my own work as I like to work with various media and this has allowed me to rethink photography as a main event rather than the bit of research into the project, I hope to incorporate this in the future. I would also like to use not only digital, but the film version of photography and so hope that disposable cameras or better yet a proper film camera will be in my hands in the near future.
